Stateline Wind Project

Client: FPL Energy
2000 - 2001

Overview:

FPL Energy (now NextEra), the nation's leading wind energy developer seeks permit approvals for 300 megawatt (MW) windfarm for its Stateline Wind Project.

FPL Energy and its consultants may have made it look easy, but permitting the largest windfarm in the world was anything but. As a member of a team that included senior corporate managers out of Juno Beach, Florida, environmental consultants and attorneys, Robert D. Kahn & Company added critical strategic counsel in permitting Stateline.

The agency helped introduce FPL Energy to the Walla Walla community, where despite its completion in 1998 of the pioneering 24 MW Vansycle Project that overlooks Walla Walla Valley, the company was unknown. In short order, FPL Energy went from a stranger with no local base, to the beneficiary of considerable, influencial civic support.

Robert D. Kahn & Company’s contribution spanned many aspects of FPL Energy’s wind development efforts. Representative tasks included: media relations; securing the participation of a key institutional landowner; the landmark agreement FPL Energy struck with the local Audubon chapter; and the muting of potentially serious opposition.

Whenever FPL Energy faced troubling challenges and potential delays, Robert D. Kahn & Company was there to help craft solutions that kept the project on track.
